US vehicles and authorisation

For the registration of a vehicle from the USA in Germany a certificate in accordance with §21 StVZO is required.

Together with the application for the awarding of an operating permit, an expert opinion according to §21 StVZO issued by an officially approved expert for vehicles has to be presented to the registration authority.

This expert opinion must include:
• a technical description of the vehicle to an extent which is required for the drawing up of the registration documents,
• proof of the compliance with the preconditions, for example the certificate of exhaust fumes performance, an expert opinion relating to the lighting, noise level performance and an expert opinion relating to the braking system and these are some of the main points of focus.
